Choose your tests
DESE’s program includes three testing modalities. Pick any combination for your school’s testing program
1) Routine COVID Safety Checks
Option 1: In-lab pooling
Follow up test required for positive pools? No
Types of tests available: Nasal swabs and saliva
Option 2: On-site pooling
Follow up test required for positive pools? Yes
Types of tests available: Nasal swabs
Follow up tests use BinaxNOW rapid tests for positive pools
2) “Test & Stay” for Close Contacts
Shallow nasal swab samples are collected at school using the BinaxNOW rapid antigen test or another approved diagnostic test. Tests are administered daily from the first day of exposure for at least five (5) days.
3) Symptomatic testing
This is for when individuals present symptoms while at school (nobody should go to school if experiencing symptoms while at home). Shallow nasal swab samples are collected at school using the BinaxNOW rapid antigen test or another approved diagnostic test.
Make a testing plan
Step 1: Staffing
CIC Health will provide a Program Coordinator and any additional staffing you request. Some schools choose to staff their testing program in-house with existing staff, others rely entirely on CIC’s team, and many use a combination.
Step 2: Testing Schedule
Your testing schedule should work for your school - not the other way around - to keep disruptions to a minimum. Remember: anyone can be trained to observe or collect specimens.
Communicate plan & prep for launch
Step 1: Communicate the testing plan
Your school community will be eager to hear about the testing plan, and they’ll have questions. Use a 3-phase communications plan to get keep your community informed ahead of launch.
Step 2: Collect consent forms
Without consent, you can’t test. CIC Health has a one-stop-shop consent form for all districts. All submissions are tracked through their software platform.

Step 3: Order supplies
Make sure to order supplies (including PPE, test tubes, etc.) ahead of your launch date. Your CIC Program Coordinator will help make sure you receive all supplies ahead of time.
